ASPEN, Colo.—Consultants are warning Pitkin County and other Western Slope communities that shipping water to the Front Range is siphoning off vital economic opportunities.

A study written by Jean Townsend says Pitkin County is losing the second-highest amount of water to the Front Range among Colorado’s six headwater mountain counties. She says the state’s thirst soon could suck more from the Aspen area’s rivers and streams.

According to the Aspen Times ( ), only Grand County loses more than Pitkin County through water diversions.
