TEMPE, Ariz. — What can Brown do for CU? Carlon Brown, Colorado’s one-and-done senior guard, has the talent to help deliver a Pac-12 championship to Boulder this March.

But coach Tad Boyle needs his “X factor” to deliver the goods more consistently down the stretch from Tempe to Salt Lake City to the Pacific Northwest.

CU’s wins and losses are closely tied to whether or not Brown’s jumpers are falling.

“When (Brown) plays well, we’re pretty darn good,” Boyle said after CU’s 71-57 loss to Arizona.

The Buffs will try to bounce back from Thursday’s setback against Arizona State today.

Brown is shooting 49.4 percent from the field in CU’s 16 victories but is just 32-of-84 (38.1 percent) in the team’s eight losses. CU is 8-1 this season when Brown shoots 40 percent or better from behind the arc.

The Buffs’ leading scorer at 12.8 points per game, Brown finished with 11 points against Arizona. The 6-foot-5 transfer from Utah went 5-for-7 shooting inside the arc but 0-for-5 from 3-point distance.

“They did a good job of playing defense. They had good help-side (defense),” Brown said. “I’ve just got to make the shots when I’m open.”

It’s hard to imagine the Buffs, 1-4 against conference foes on the road, stepping forward and wearing the Pac-12 crown without a road victory today. The Sun Devils (8-16, 4-8) are 0-5 against the top five teams in the Pac-12, including a 69-54 loss at CU on Jan. 19.

The Buffs (16-8, 8-4) are currently tied with Arizona (17-8, 8-4) and Oregon (17-7, 8-4) for third place in the standings, one game behind Cal (19-6, 9-3) and Washington (16-8, 9-3).
