ASPEN, Colo.—The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority has been asked to approve a declaration on natural gas exploration and extraction, as it explores using buses that run on compressed natural gas rather than diesel.

Agency staff had drafted a statement saying, “RFTA expects the gas and oil industry to adhere to industry best practices when exploring for, extracting, and delivering the energy resources upon which RFTA relies and, to the best of its ability, RFTA will attempt to do business with only those that do.” It goes on to say, “Additionally, RFTA does not support exploration or drilling for natural resources in environmentally sensitive areas.”

Board members split 4-4 this week on whether to approve it.

Staff members plan to revise the statement and present it to the board next month.
