GILL — A 100-year-old barn went up in flames in minutes Tuesday, killing six goats on the rental property near Gill.

The barn was one of two outbuildings on the property, about 10 miles northeast of Greeley. Stephanie Cooke, spokeswoman for the Platte Valley Fire Protection District in Kersey, said about six trucks and 15 firefighters responded after the 11:45 a.m. call to the scene of the 30-foot by 40-foot outbuilding at Weld County Road 53 and Colo. 392 near Gill. Galeton Fire Protection District firefighters responded, as well.

By the time crews arrived, the barn had already burned, and crews could only put water on it to keep it cool, Cooke said.

The family renting the property had stored equipment and goats inside the barn, she said.
