Come Saturday night, Alex Peña, a Class 2A 126-pounder, hopes to put his fourth on the floor — as in his fourth wrestling championship.
The Ignacio senior, who brings a 30-2 record into today’s opening rounds at the Pepsi Center, will be the most scrutinized of the 896 individual spots competing for 56 individual weight classes over four classifications.
Currently 130-7 in his career, he needs four consecutive victories.
Peña has been consistent over his career: As a freshman, he was 39-1 at 112; as a sophomore, he was 27-2 at 119; and last year he was 34-2 at 119.
If Peña comes through, he will become the 17th four-time champion in state history. The most recent was Ponderosa’s Jake Snider, who won his fourth in 2010.
