A 29-year-old woman hit and killed by a bus outside Aspen early on New Year’s Day had a blood-alcohol level three and half times the legal limit for driving, the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office said this evening.

Joanie Kocab was struck by a Roaring Fork Transportation Authority bus as she walked on or along Colorado Highway 82 near Owl Creek Road at about 2:30 a.m.

The area is unlit and has no sidewalk or bus stop nearby, authorities said at the time. Toxicology tests were recently completed.

Kocab lived in Basalt but had recently moved there from Kansas, where she had served as director of the Leavenworth County Historical Society from May 2007 until June 2011.

She attended the University of Kansas and Fort Hays State University, according to previous media reports.
