DURANGO, Colo.—Trial has begun for a La Plata County man accused of assaulting three women with whom he was involved over the course of 12 years.

The Durango Herald reported Thursday () that Louie Albert Lucero is charged with 17 counts, including assault and false imprisonment.

Prosecutor Aaryn Richardson said Wednesday that two women suffered broken arms, two were branded with a hot iron and all three were beaten by the 51-year-old Lucero, who denies the allegations.

Public defense lawyer Katie Telfer said nothing happened that was non-consensual. She argued the women didn’t report the abuse at the time and that doctors didn’t have reason to doubt their stories.

Lucero’s trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
