LONGMONT, Colo.—A 53-year-old disabled Longmont woman whose apartment owner tried to charge fees for her service pet says she is relieved she will be able to keep the pet in her home at no cost.
Audrey Warden says she was asked to pay a $400 pet deposit, a $250 late fee and an extra $25 per month in pet rent to keep her cat in her apartment. She disputed the charges because she has post-traumatic stress disorder.
Federal discrimination laws allow someone with a disability to keep a companion animal free of charge if a medical professional says they need it.
Victor Sulzer, an attorney who represents Grandview Meadows apartments, tells the Longmont Times-Call ( ) that Warden’s request was approved Friday afternoon after his office received proper documentation of her condition.
