Five journalists at The Denver Post won awards of excellence in the 33rd annual creative competition by the Society of News Design.
Staff photographers captured three of the five awards. John Leyba won for a sports picture titled “Ground rules”; Joe Amon for his 9/11 special-section photo of the Lincoln Memorial; and AAron Ontiveroz for his portrait of high school lacrosse player Wilkins Dismuke.
Matt Swaney, design director, won for “Life in the Fast Lane,” a two-page sports presentation on high school swimmer Missy Franklin.
J. Damon Cain, managing editor for presentation and design, won an award for “We will remember,” a photo page included in The Post’s 9/11 special section.
SND, an international organization whose mission is to enhance communication through excellence in visual communication, handed out 717 awards to newspapers and magazines from 29 countries.
Five newspapers were named “Best Designed,” none from the United States. They were: Excelsior, Mexico City; National Post, Toronto; Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Frankfurt; The Grid, Toronto; and Politiken, Copenhagen.
