PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo.—Sheriff’s officials have identified a backcountry skier who died in an avalanche on Wolf Creek Pass as 37-year-old Andre Hartlief.

He and two friends were skiing Thursday when the avalanche struck. One friend wasn’t caught in the slide. The other suffered a knee injury but survived.

Hartlief was a first-year ski patroller at Keystone Ski Resort but also had worked at other resorts.

Mineral County sheriff’s officials and Keystone officials say he was originally from Australia but had come to the U.S. from New Zealand.

The Alamosa Valley Courier reports () Hartlief’s survivors include a brother and his parents.
