The Green Mountain Falls Town Hall, a historic building that housed town business and important documents, burned to the ground early Thursday.
“I was in shock, absolute shock,” said Tyler Stevens, mayor of Green Mountain Falls, west of Colorado Springs. “I couldn’t image the devastation of seeing an institution of our town like that. It’s just devastating to see.”
Stevens said the fire started about 12:30 a.m. and gutted the Town Hall and also caused minor damage to a home behind the building. The people inside the home were able to get out safely.
The Town Hall was a tiny building, built in 1898, that served as the town’s first school house. Green Mountain Falls was incorporated that same year. The school building was later converted to the Town Hall, where it was the center of town business, hosted board meetings and also contained important documents.
