A man who police say escaped from shackles while in custody at Denver Health Medical Center last week has been charged with felony escape, the Denver District Attorney’s Office announced this afternoon.
Samuel Lee Govea, 22, was being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg when authorities discovered he had several outstanding warrants in other jurisdictions.
Govea was taken into custody and chained to his hospital bed, but on Sunday he dismantled the bed, removed his IV and fled.
He was re-arrested Monday afternoon in Edgewater after a Crime Stopper’s tip led authorities to his location.
Escape is a Class 4 felony that carries a penalty of up to six years in prison. Govea appears in Denver court Tuesday to be advised of the new charge against him.
He was also wanted on suspicion of burglary, assault, menacing, criminal mischief, violating a protection order and failing to register as a sex offender.
