A 23-year-old Colorado Springs man parked his SUV in the right lane of Interstate 25 and was walking around the vehicle when he was killed in a crash early Saturday, authorities say.

A second man, who was in the passenger seat of the SUV, was rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Castle Rock spokeswoman Kristin Accola said. He is 25.

The names of the two men have not been released pending notification of family members.

The 23-year-old man was driving south just south of the Founders/Meadows Parkway exit at about 2 a.m. when he parked his Ford Expedition in the right lane for some unknown reason, Accola said.

He inexplicably got out of the vehicle and was on the highway when a 41-year-old Monument man driving a Ford Excursion struck the SUV, which hit the man and threw him into the left lane, Accola said.

The man was killed instantly, she said.

The Monument man is being investigated for drunken driving, Accola said, and the victim also is being screened for possible intoxication.

The highway was closed for several hours during the accident investigation. It was reopened at about 7 a.m., she said.
