Cherry Creek (18-7) picked a fine time to put on a shooting display.
The Bruins almost couldn’t miss from beyond the 3-point arc, hitting 12-of-16 in upsetting No. 2 seed Ralston Valley in the R.W. Truscott Region 70-64 on Tuesday.
Nick Gauna made six 3-pointers en route to his team-high 22 points, and Sam Owsley had five on his way to 17 points.
The turning point for Cherry Creek, which plays Rangeview in the Great 8 on Friday at The Denver Coliseum, was at the end of the second quarter. Trailing 21-20, the Bruins went on a 13-0 run to close out the first half.
Ralston Valley (19-6) got 27 points from Chase Duben in defeat.

The Golden Eagles built an 18-point halftime lead and then hung on against Glenn Wilson Region top seed Fairview.
A balanced scoring attack led by Eric Nevins (19), Mitch Carter (17) and Elijah Valdez (13) was enough to outlast Shane O’Neill (29) and the Knights’ furious comeback.
Fifth-seeded Mountain Vista (18-8) will play Highlands Ranch in the Great 8.

The talented guard duo of Cory Calvert and Josh Adams combined for 42 points for the top-seeded Wolverines (22-3) in the Ray Ball Region.
Calvert finished with 10 rebounds and six assists.

The “other” Jeffco team still in the tournament advanced.
Columbine (21-4), behind Nick Carpinello’s game-high 25 points, pulled away from the Wildcats in the second and third quarters to advance in the Ray Ball Region.
Third-seeded Fruita Monument (21-4) had only three players who scored — Drew Bridges (18 points), Alex Padgett (17) and Spencer Fair (six).
