BOULDER – — Boulder officials acknowledged Tuesday that potentially toxic materials line the floors of three rooms at the South Boulder Recreation Center and will have to be removed at an unknown cost.

Jennifer Bray, a spokeswoman for Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Department, said city officials have known since late January that a rubberized layer of flooring in the center’s main gymnasium, racquetball and Pilates rooms contain “elevated levels of mercury and lead.”

Bray said there is “no immediate danger to the public or employees” because the rubber floor is covered by wood in the gym and on the racquetball courts, and by layers of carpet and vinyl tile in the Pilates studio.
