University of Colorado sophomore Alex Stewart rallied with a 5-under-par 67 onTuesday to capture women’s medalist honors at the Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championships at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans. Stewart, who started the day in fifth place, helped the 17th-ranked Buffs to a second-place finish.
Stewart’s 5-under 211 total beat Cassy Isagawa of Oregon by one stroke. The Buffaloes’ 16-over 880 total was three shots behind 13th-ranked Duke. CU and Duke passed No. 4 Southern California in the final round.
Coloradans top triathalon awards. Christine Anderson of Boulder was named female triathlete of the year by USA Triathlon. Anderson was the first elite amateur finisher at the Chicago Triathlon last summer. She also was the top amateur at Ironman 70.3 in Boulder and in the Wildflower Triathlon Olympic-distance event in Bradley, Calif.
Curt Chesney of Boulder and Susan Williams of Littleton were named masters triathletes of the year. Chesney won the award for the second consecutive year. Williams, the Olympic bronze medalist in 2004, was the top overall finisher at the USAT age-group national championships and won her age group at the long-distance world championships.
Michael Orendorff of Pueblo was named grand masters triathlete of the year.
Garten joins McCartney on ballot. Former Colorado football coach Bill McCartney is on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame for the third consecutive year and is joined for the second year by former guard Joe Garten.
McCartney is CU’s all-time winningest coach, going 93-55-5 from 1982-94. His 1989 and 1990 teams played for national championships, the 1990 team winning it.

Mines’ Green is RMAC player of year. Colorado Mines junior guard Brett Green, a Peyton High School graduate, was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the year. Colorado Christian sophomore guard Christina Whitelaw of Colorado Springs St. Mary’s received the women’s award.
