TELLURIDE, Colo.—Authorities are seeking more funding following a rash of avalanche rescues that cost about $50,000 per rescue.
San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters says the Search and Rescue department in his county only has a $100,000 budget.
So far this season, six people have died in Colorado and the risk is highest it has been in years.
Masters tells KUSA-TV ( ) backcountry skiers, snowshoers and snowboarders should buy backcountry insurance that only costs $12 for five years or pay the full cost of a rescue.
