COLORADO SPRINGS — The Doherty girls basketball team has taken the mantra “defense wins championships” to heart.
Behind a relentless trapping and pressing attack, the Spartans smothered Rocky Mountain with their defense and emerged with a 57-44 win Wednesday night. Second-seeded Doherty (23-2) got its 11th consecutive win and a spot in the Great 8 of the 5A state tournament against No. 1 seed Legacy (21-4) Saturday.
“It got ugly there at the end, but we were up by 20-something points on a great team in the Sweet 16, so that’s a great win,” Doherty coach Pat McKiernan said. “We’ve just got to continue and play a complete game from beginning to end.”
