March in Denver brings all types of weather, oftentimes changing from day to day. One day may be mild and wet, while the next may be cold and dry.
Extreme weather events in March also have occurred on the same day.
On March 8, 1992, the day began with sunny and mild conditions in metro Denver as temperatures rose into the 50s. By that afternoon, however, severe thunderstorms blasted the area with large hail and tornadoes.
A powerful cold front arrived in the wake of these storms, sending temperatures plummeting. Rain changed to snow, and strong winds developed, resulting in blizzard conditions. A total of 12.4 inches of snow fell at Stapleton International Airport, with even higher amounts across the region.
March is the snowiest month of the year on average in Denver, although what snow does fall usually isn’t on the ground very long because of abundant sunshine and warmer temperatures. On average, 10 inches of snow falls in March.
The first day of spring also occurs this month, arriving in Denver early on Tuesday, March 20.
