DENVER—Federal jurors have convicted a man accused in a deadly assault of a fellow inmate at the prison in Florence known as Supermax, which houses some of the country’s most notorious criminals.

The jury convicted 36-year-old Dominic Stewart on Thursday of second-degree murder in the death of Gregory Joiner in 2005. Prosecutors say Stewart had stomped on Joiner’s head and neck. Inmate James Duckett pleaded guilty earlier to assault for his role in the attack.

The Denver Post reports prosecutors had argued the killing was deliberate, not in the heat of passion, and warranted a first-degree murder conviction for Stewart.

Stewart faces 30 years to life in prison at a sentencing hearing scheduled June 8. Stewart was serving a life sentence for another second-degree murder conviction when Joiner died.
