LAFAYETTE — Should a man, bloodied and on the verge of collapse after being shot at point-blank range five times, be found guilty of murdering the person who pulled the trigger?

That’s what a jury will have to decide beginning this week, when 34-year-old Adam Raszynski goes on trial on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of his mother, Rita Redford, in her Lafayette home last year.

Former Boulder prosecutor Trip DeMuth, who is not involved in the case, said the dramatic confrontation at 2817 Whitetail Circle is not as cut-and-dried as it may seem at first glance.

“It’s not as simple as just looking at the fact that the mother shot the son five times,” he said. “Was the response by (Raszynski) reasonable to meet the threat at the time and under those circumstances?”
