WATERLOO, Iowa—Rep. Bruce Braley plans to visit a World War II battle site where his father served: the island of Iwo Jima.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports ( ) the Iowa Democrat will be accompanying a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who fought there in 1945, David Greene, of Waterloo.
The visit is part of a program organized by the nonprofit Greatest Generations Foundation, of Denver, which is paying for their travel. The foundation organized a program so 12 American veterans could visit Pacific World War II battlefields with a class of Ohio State University history students.
Braley’s late father, Byard Braley, of Montezuma, also served on the Pacific island. It was captured from Japanese forces after a bloody battle.
