Denver Post business reporter David Migoya was recognized Saturday by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers for his reporting on Colorado’s foreclosure system.

Migoya’s coverage of Colorado’s public trustee system and the powerful players that influenced the process by which Colorado homes were taken back by lenders received a “Best in Business” award in the Real Estate category. The awards were presented in Indianapolis as part of the organization’s annual conference.

Migoya’s series of stories uncovered a variety of issues with the trustee system, which is unique nationally. Among them: how counties kept money from foreclosure auctions that was due homeowners; how laws were quietly manipulated to make foreclosures faster and easier for banks; and how the trustees violated state ethics rules by accepting contributions and giving contracts to the top foreclosure law firms.

Judges described Migoya’s coverage as “The total package — compelling storytelling, exhaustive research, a unique and fresh view of an otherwise well-worn topic, and a public service.”

The two other winners in the category, which covered all media regardless of circulation size or platforms, were The Baltimore Sun and The Miami Herald.
