Neon colors are popping up in force this spring, and this blast from the past applies to makeup, as well as clothing and accessories. But it’s not for everyone, and it takes some finesse to pull it off. Michael Moore has some ideas on how to embrace the trend:

1. Start with one feature and keep it simple, such as natural colors on the eyes and a pop of color on the lips. Think about glosses if you do not want a bold layer of color. Glosses are often a sheer form of bright color. For the evening make it a bit more zesty with a bold neon lip color and a sheer bold gloss on the top.

2. Add color to the eyes, but layer it over a neutral color to give it a pop of color to the lid or the corner of the eye. This gives a neon illusion, like a trendy sheer fabric from the spring runways.

3. Spring and summer blushes are bright neon pinks, corals and oranges. These are great shades that will add life to your face this season. Always smile before you apply your blush. Apply from the apples of your cheeks toward your ear.

4. Don’t forget your nails. Neon pink, orange or blue make a statement (colors from Milani, lef). Be sure to keep the shape square and short. The square nail is the top trend this spring and summer.

5. Think twice about neon for a big meeting or a wedding where it might not be appropriate. But for a night on the town or a party, go for it and pop a neon eye shadow, a bold blush or lip shade.
