HIGHLANDS RANCH — When most people think Rock Canyon boys lacrosse, the immediate thought is Wilkins Dismuke.
Understandibly so. The junior has after all made a commitment to collegiate powerhouse Johns Hopkins.
But if you focus on Dismuke, the Jags have a plethora of weapons to beat you with. Their team first production was on display Friday at Shea Stadium in a 16-9 Douglas County League victory over Ponderosa.
“It’s our mantra,” said Rock Canyon coach Louis Goldin of his team-oriented offense.
The Jags (6-2, 3-0), playing the third game of their spring break week, got off to a slow start against the Mustangs and trailed 4-1 early in the second quarter before the lights came on.
“I think in the future a faster start would definitely help us,” freshman Colton Jackson said. “We’ve been doing that lately.”
Rock Canyon broke free from a 5-5 halftime deadlock with 6-1 run in the third. Conrad Coppage added his fourth and fifth goals in the run and Jackson’s two long distance lasers nearly ripped the net.
The lead grew to as much as seven in the fourth before Ponderosa (1-5, 0-3) made a mini-rally to cut the lead to 13-9 with over six minutes to play.
It was as close as they would get before the Jags defense shut them out the rest of the way.
“Unfortunately you get a run that goes against you, we were just to slow to stop the momentum,” Ponderosa coach Pat Tierney said. “We just have to learn to eliminte the mistakes.”
Dismuke did score twice for Rock Canyon as did Michael Walters.
Bret Kopasz and Kevin Solley each scored twice for Ponderosa.
