A 35-year-old Crested Butte man was killed this morning and his instructor was critically injured in a tandem skydiving accident at the Fremont County Airport this morning, The Canon City Daily Record reported.

Their names have not been released.

Witnesses said both men’s parachutes opened but tangled, causing the pair to go into a spin and land in a field off U.S. Highway 50 near the airport about six miles east of Canon City near Penrose, Capt. Don Pinover of the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department told the newspaper.

The accident happened about 9 a.m.

The instructor is a 28-year-old from Fountain who has logged more than 600 solo jumps and 50 tandem jumps, according to The Canon City Daily Record.

He was airlifted to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.
