A man who allegedly fired at officers in Evans, hitting one, has been identified and police say he turned the gun on himself.
Matthew Gene Rockwell, 25, opened fire on officers as they responded to a medical assist call early Friday morning at a home in the 2400 block of Quay Street, the Evans Police Department said in a media release.
Officer Peter Bratton was shot twice, once in the upper back with a second bullet hitting his duty belt and lodging in the officer’s Taser.
Bratton is “expected to make a full recovery,” police said.
A second officer, who returned fire, was not hit. The officer is on standard administrative leave pending an investigation.
Police initially reported that Rockwell was hit in the head by return fire. Further investigation has revealed that Rockwell’s wound was “self-inflicted,” police said.
Rockwell remains in the hospital where he is being treated for his wound.
A woman who was home at the time was treated at the hospital for serious injuries that were not related to the shooting.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
