EVANS, Colo.—Evans police say a man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head after exchanging gunfire with officers had fired the shot himself.

Police said Monday that the shot that struck 25-year-old Matthew Gene Rockwell, of Evans, early Friday came from his own gun, and his wound was self-inflicted.

Police say Rockwell opened fire on officers who were responding to a medical call early Friday, striking officer Peter Bratton in the back. The injuries aren’t life-threatening.

Police say another officer returned fire but didn’t strike Rockwell. That officer’s name wasn’t released.
