CARBONDALE – — Voters in Carbondale narrowly upheld a ban on the use of plastic bags at the town’s City Market grocery store, 718 to 691, in Tuesday’s municipal election.
“I’m pleased with the bag-ban result,” said Trustee John Hoffmann, who won re-election Tuesday and voted for the ban when it was enacted last year.
Also pleased by the result was trustee-elect Allyn Harvey.
“I voted for it,” he said. “I think shoppers will adjust. I know I have.”
The Carbondale Board of Trustees originally approved an ordinance enacting the ban, which affects only grocery stores larger than 3,500 square feet, in October by a vote of 5 to 1.
