“If you don’t leave the world a better place than you received it, what did you really do with your life?” asks Heidi Grove, a woman determined to make her community a better place for future generations. In the last few years, Heidi earned a Master’s degree in Counseling from Regis University College for Professional Studies (CPS), co-founded a drop-in center for at-risk youth, published a book, and regularly participates in committees to address local and statewide juvenile justice and policy reform. Her holistic approach to self-actualization started with Regis.

“When I contacted the enrollment counselors they actually took me out for coffee and sat down with me and talked to me about what my goals are; what my dreams are [They] laid out the entire process for me,” she says.

Heidi spent three rigorous years at CPS. She often found herself in the counseling lab, providing guidance to real-life patients, with a professor watching through a two-way mirror, so that she could receive on-the-spot feedback. As a graduate, Heidi continues to seek guidance from her professors.

“The faculty still supports me even though I am no longer a student. I still talk to them on a very regular basis,” she continues.
Heidi met two peers at CPS with whom she started Denver-nonprofit The Youth Connection. She discusses her work in regular posts on the CPS blog. Heidi hopes that by sharing her experiences, she can motivate others to make a difference in their communities too.

Regis University recognized Heidi’s contribution to the community with the prestigious Social Justice Award in 2008. In 2013, her influence will reach beyond the local community, when The Youth Connection is profiled in a nationally distributed post-secondary education textbook.
