DENVER—The Colorado Department of Human Services has agreed to reduce the amount of time people charged with crimes must wait for mental illness evaluations to determine if they are fit for trial.
The agreement settles a 2011 lawsuit against the state after some defendants were forced to wait up to six months, which is longer than their likely sentences.
According to the Denver Post ( ), doctors will examine defendants housed at the state mental hospital in Pueblo within 24 days on average from the date of a court order. For defendants in jail, doctors get up to 30 days.
