There are more than 500 species of bees in Colorado. On Tuesday, Virginia Scott, insect-collections manager at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, introduces you to them in “Bee Gardens” at 6:30 p.m. Scott will share various ways to attract bees to your yard and the benefits of native bees. She contributed to “The Bees of Colorado (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila),” a natural-history inventory of Colorado bees. Free. Henderson Building, CU-Boulder campus, 303-492-6892,

A Capitol idea

The Mayan Theater hosts a second screening of “Centennial Statehouse: Colorado’s Greatest Treasure”at 7 p.m. Thursday. In case you missed the first screening, in February, or couldn’t make it because of the snowstorm, the Heritage Tourism Program of the Colorado Tourism Office will again present this work by local photographer and filmmaker Jim Havey. For the birds

There are two avian extravaganzas coming up:

•Jefferson County Open Space is hosting an introductory NestWatch session from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lookout Mountain Nature Center. Citizen scientists will learn how to record data about nesting birds and then enter it into an online database. Reservations are required. R14.htm or nestwatch

• Wild Bird Information and Rehabilitation of Denver (Wild BIRD) is hosting “Baby Shower for the Birds” April 21 and 22 to prepare for the upcoming baby-bird season. (Go to for a list of requested items.) The organization is a nonprofit that feeds and cares for abandoned baby birds and rehabilitates sick and injured birds from May through August. Tours, activities and refreshments are included. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. next weekend.1880 S. Quebec Way,

Rock on

The Colorado Mineral & Fossil Show is an extravaganza of fossils, minerals, jewelry, beads, books, home décor and more. It will be held Friday through April 22. Look for Ruben Garcia, a.k.a. “Mr. Meteorite,” who will showcase his extensive collection. The Comet Meteorite Shop from Russia will also participate.
