DENVER—The president of the University of Colorado says state funding for higher education will dry up within a decade at the current rate of spending cuts.
The Denver Post reported Friday ( ) that Benson says some other states have increased funding by as much as 59 percent over the past five years.
Benson says full-time enrollment at Colorado colleges and universities has increased more than 23 percent over the past five years and state funding has decreased by $216 million, or 31 percent, over the past two years alone.
He says colleges and universities are looking elsewhere for funding, including partnerships with businesses.
Benson doesn’t think the state is inclined to raise taxes or take other steps to increase funding.
