COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—An Air Force airman who escaped during a bathroom break on his way to jail is back in custody after two days on the run in the sparsely populated forests between Woodland Park and Colorado Springs.
The Gazette ( ) reports Herbert Mullens escaped Wednesday evening while being taken to the Teller County jail after attending a pretrial confinement hearing at Peterson Air Force Base. He was confined pending charges of driving while intoxicated, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Teller County Sheriff Mike Ensminger says Mullens was arrested Friday afternoon near the El Paso and Teller county line, and Peterson officials are investigating how he escaped.
