Fort Collins police are investigating after a 48-year-old man was apparently stabbed in the back during a dispute.

Around 7:15 a.m., a resident at the Whispering Pines Apartment Complex, 515 E. Drake Road, called police after hearing an argument, according to a news release from Fort Collins Police Services.

When officers arrived at the apartment complex, they found a man with what appeared to be a stab would to his back. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The man was later identified as Heber Richardson.

By 8:45 a.m., officers had 33-year-old Gary Lee Johnson in custody on charges of 2nd degree assault and felony menancing.

Police said Richardson, armed with an ax handle, and Johnson, armed with a kitchen knife, were engaged in a dispute over the return of personal property.
