GLENWOOD SPRINGS – — Construction on the new Glenwood Springs Branch Library and a new two-level parking structure in downtown Glenwood Springs is expected to begin this week.
A special meeting of Glenwood Springs City Council is scheduled for this morning for final authorization to proceed on the parking structure in the 900 block of Cooper Avenue.
Some construction activity could commence today, said Stan Kiser of Grand Junction-based FCI Constructors. FCI is the lead contractor on the two projects.
The library is to be built in the 800 block of Cooper Avenue, at the southwest corner of Cooper and Eighth, and the parking structure is to be built in the 900 block of Cooper, at the site of the existing city parking lot.
The city of Glenwood Springs and the Downtown Development Authority are building the parking structure, while the library district and Colorado Mountain College are building the library. The library will include an underground parking garage for CMC and second floor space that could be used in the future by the college. The two projects total $17 million.
Construction work can be expected Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Some weekend work is possible, although not anticipated immediately, Kiser said.
