GARY, Ind.—People lined the streets of northwest Indiana holding American flags to honor a soldier originally from Dyer who was killed on his third deployment to Afghanistan.
The Times of Munster reports ( ) that the body of 32-year-old Army Staff Sgt. David Nowaczyk (Noh’-ah-chek) arrived at the Gary-Chicago International Airport Monday morning and was escorted by motorcade to McCoy Funeral Home in Hammond. Nowaczyk died April 15 of wounds from an improvised explosive device attack.
Visitation will be held Tuesday evening at St. Thomas More Church in Munster. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, followed by burial in Schererville at Memory Lane Memorial Park and Funeral Chapel.
Nowaczyk was a 1997 graduate of Lake Central High School. He was based out of Fort Carson, Colo.
