A haystack 25 feet wide by 75 feet tall caught fire and threatened numerous structures at a feed lot near Fort Collins this afternoon.

The property owners were trying to keep the flames from spreading to nearby grain silos and other straw by spraying water and using tractors to separate materials when fire crews arrived at Mountain View Feeds at 5200 North Taft Hill Road just before noon.

Investigators were still trying to determine the origin and cause of the fire this afternoon.

The nearest fire hydrant was approximately one mile away, according to the Poudre Valley Fire Authority.

The loss and damage is estimated between $25,000 and $30,000, according to the fire department.

Crews were expected to continue to work at the scene until this evening, before turning the property back over to its owners to monitor.

” The smell of smoke will be very detectable within a couple miles of this incident for the next few days,” the Poudre Valley Fire Authority stated. “Surrounding residents should not be alarmed should they see or smell smoke in this area. If, however, there is any doubt call 9-1-1.

Personnel from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, Poudre Valley Hospital Emergency Services and Wellington Fire Protection District responded to the blaze.
