The first Saturday in May was a beautiful spring day, and many Coloradans did more than just enjoy it. They helped others while doing so.

More than 9,000 people were in City Park on Saturday morning, walking to raise awareness and money for multiple-sclerosis research. Meanwhile, thousands of dogs and their owners were in Washington Park for the 19th annual Furry Scurry, raising money for the Denver Dumb Friends League.

Organizers of the MS Walk were hoping to raise as much as $1 million to support programs and research.

There were also MS marches Saturday in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and Grand Junction. Pueblo holds its march next weekend, and Boulder County, Loveland and Glenwood Springs will march May 19.

MS affects about 88,000 people in Colorado and Wyoming, organizers say. Nationally, about one in every 500 people is living with MS.

MS affects the central nervous system. Its cause is not known, and there is no cure.

The Furry Scurry, which says it is the largest walk for animals in the nation, drew more than 12,000 pet lovers and 5,000 dogs.

The Dumb Friends League estimates nearly $1 million was raised as part of the event. Registration for the event was $50 per person and included a Furry Scurry logo T-shirt.
