There were two notable spring feats Friday night as high school sports nears the end of the 2011-12 school year.

At Denver’s All-City Stadium, the Rangeview boys 1,600-meter relay team surpassed a 15-year-old state record. Jordan Medina, Tyler Bloyer, Khalil Sellers and Steffen Johnson ran a combined 3 minutes, 14.73 seconds at a meet hosted by Thomas Jefferson.

It was and wasn’t unexpected — Medina, Sellers and Johnson were on the 2011 Raiders’ Class 5A state championship 1,600 relay team, and coach Dave Gonzales said: “I thought we’d have a crack at it but didn’t know it would be (Friday). Holy cow!”

Rangeview bettered the mark held by the 1997 Montbello team that ran 3:15.34.

Also Friday, Middle Park junior right-hander Tyler Franek threw a no-hitter against Arrupe Jesuit in the 3A Frontier League. Franek struck out every batter he faced but one — he issued a walk with one out in the seventh inning — and finished with 21 strikeouts in an 11-0 victory.

“It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” coach James Newberry said. “He threw all fastballs.”
