After enlisting in the Army, Dominique Rabine knew she wanted to become an officer. But a shattered hip suffered during a training accident, and subsequent separation from active-duty service, forced her to reconsider her career options.

“That was my goal, to be an officer,” Dominique said. “When that didn’t happen, I had to very quickly figure out what I was going to do.”
With a deep appreciation for servicemen and women embedded in her as a fourth-generation military “brat,” Dominique knew she wanted to continue working with the military in some way, despite the setback. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in business administration, she was able to do just that, securing a job as an instructor/trainer with the Department of Defense Child Development Services.

“I was offered the opportunity to become an assistant director, but they told me I was never really going to go much further in salary after that,” she said. “The Department of Defense requires those positions to have a master’s degree, and I only had my bachelor’s.”

Seeking out an adult education degree that would refine her skills working with adults, but also facing the responsibilities of a single parent, she eventually found the Adult Education and Training distance degree offered by Colorado State University through CSU OnlinePlus.

“I was able to, through the program, manage my time and my work better, and I [didn’t] have to sacrifice so much with my child to do so,” she said. “[Everyone in my cohort] all had children, we all had stuff going on, all career professionals. We were able to get to know each others’ work, each others’ backgrounds, and we really became our own little support system.”

Rabine was recently selected as a Ph.D. candidate at Auburn University, and has also accepted a job as a Program Developer for the Office of Professional Continuing Education at Auburn University. She views both of these as instrumental in getting her back to where she ultimately wants to be: impacting military families through training and instruction.

“There’s no way Auburn would be looking at me if I didn’t have my master’s in adult education,” Rabine said.
