As police detectives and Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents looked for evidence in a red-brick house and the yard around it Tuesday afternoon, neighbors said they were stunned that something had gone so terribly wrong in their Thornton neighborhood.

Police say a woman called shortly after midnight to say her husband had been critically wounded and their son was dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

The man, identified by his family as 30-year-old Kevin Bristol, and boy, a toddler named Michael, were taken from the home at 9270 High St. to a hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. The man was in critical condition.

Thornton police spokesman Matt Barnes said the investigation is ongoing. Police told 9News they do not believe that the community is at risk.
