FORT CARSON, Colo.—A Fort Carson soldier from Arizona who was killed in Afghanistan is being remembered as someone who earned respect quietly.
Hundreds of people attended a memorial service Monday at the Army post in Colorado for 30-year-old 1st Lt. Alejo Thompson of Yuma, Ariz.
The Gazette reports ( ) Maj. Korey Brown told mourners that soldiers looked up to Thompson and wanted to be like him.
Thompson was killed earlier this month when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Combat Team, part of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson.
Thompson deployed to Afghanistan in March. He also had served in Iraq from March 2003 to February 2004.
Survivors include his wife, son and daughter.
