IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo.—The highway to the top of Mount Evans is open as far as Summit Lake.
The Colorado Department of Transportation says the lower portion of Colorado 5 opened Friday but crews are still inspecting the upper portion 5 for road damage and ice.
It’s not clear whether the remainder of the road will open Friday.
Once opened, the road is expected to remain so through Labor Day weekend, weather permitting.
The highway is billed as America’s highest paved road, at more than 14,000 feet.
Transportation officials are warning drivers and cyclists that the road has been damaged in two places near Summit Lake.
