ASPEN — Pitkin County commissioners on Wednesday approved the purchase of a lot in Redstone as open space over the objection of one local resident.
The 0.67-acre lot is at the south entrance to Redstone, bordered by Redstone Boulevard and the Crystal River. It is to be carved off the property that contains the Redstone Country Store.
Open space officials say preventing development there will preserve views from the boulevard to the historic coke ovens on the opposite side of Highway 133 as well as views of the historic Redstone Inn from the highway.
Redstone real estate broker Jeff Bier said he and others in the small community south of Carbondale have concerns about the purchase of a developable lot along the town’s main boulevard for open space.
“The number of available parcels for future development in Redstone can probably be counted on one hand,” he said.
Commissioners said they trust the appraisal that was done on the property, and Commissioner George Newman said preserving the parcel is important to the entrance to Redstone. The land is across the river from Elk Park, another county open space holding.
