A 60-year-old woman was trampled by a mother elk Tuesday outside her apartment in Estes Park.

The woman — identified by 9News as Robin Pattishall — was flown to Medical Center of the Rockies with unknown injuries.

The woman was attacked at about 3 p.m. outside her apartment in the 1200 block of Community Drive.

There was no indication that she was doing anything to provoke the elk.

“Elk can be very aggressive this time of year, when females have young calves to protect,” Estes Park Police Chief Wes Kufeld said in a statement.

He recommended avoiding elk with young completely.

The (Fort Collins) Coloradoan reported that the cow elk had a calf with her at the time of the attack.
