LAPORTE, Colo.—Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper is praising firefighters for protecting a school while battling a northern Colorado wildfire blamed for one death.

Hickenlooper says some of the firefighters watched their own homes burn while trying to protect the school.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that there is some containment but didn’t release an exact figure.

On Monday, fire crews backed by air support were able to anchor one corner of the fire and start building containment lines by hand. Despite that, the fire still grew to 68 square miles, a 4-square-mile increase.

The fire has damaged more than 100 structures and prompted hundreds of evacuations since it started on Saturday.
