LONGMONT — Phantom Fireworks is waiting to see whether it can proceed with setting up two stands in Longmont, in light of Gov. John Hickenlooper’s Thursday executive order banning the private use of fireworks throughout Colorado.

“We’ve been in Longmont for several years,” said Joee Witter, a Salt Lake City-based regional manager with Phantom.

However, if the city decides to ban fireworks sales, “we’re happy to comply,” Witter said Friday. Phantom had applied for a city permit to sell fireworks from locations in the 1700 block of Main Street and the 1200 block of South Hover Street. Longmont city spokesman Rigo Leal said Friday, “The city is still reviewing its position.”

On Thursday, Hickenlooper issued an order banning many types of “open burning,” including fireworks. The governor’s directive specifies that “commercial, professional and municipal fireworks displays” will be allowed when those events have written approval of the sheriff of the county in which the display is to occur. The order does not specifically prohibit fireworks sales.
