Accused kidnapper Dorian Hardiman turned himself into police this evening after allegedly snatching his son and son’s mother from their Glendale apartment earlier in the day.
Police searched for hours before Hardiman — at the “strong urging” of officers — turned himself in and mother Sonia Lopez, 30, and her 14-month-old son were returned safely to the police station.
“We contacted him through some of his family members,” Glendale Police Chief Victor Ross said. “There will be charges. This was a kidnapping. I don’t know yet what those charges will be.”
Authorities busted Hardiman, 30, on Friday for violating a protection order by coming into contact with Lopez, but he bonded out of jail, Ross said.
Officers stood by this morning as Hardiman collected clothes and other items from the couple’s apartment at 501 S. Fairfax Ave.
The so-called “civil standby” was uneventful, Ross said.
Around 3:30 p.m. , Hardiman allegedly returned to the apartment and was seen forcing Lopez and the toddler into a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee , Ross said.
“He has a history of domestic violence and also being violent with police,” Ross said.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a media alert and asked other jurisdictions to be on the lookout for Hardiman and the vehicle.
Ross said an Amber Alert was not an option because a parent was taken along with the child.
Court records show that Hardiman’s lengthy criminal record includes a 2008 conviction for domestic violence-related assault in Jefferson County as well as charges for violating a protection order that were eventually dropped by the district attorney’s office.
He was also arrested in Arapahoe County in 2007 on suspicion of menacing with a deadly weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia.
