The Christian Science Metropolitan Reading Room marked 100 years of continuous service to downtown Denver on Saturday.

Denver’s Reading Room, designated a Jointly Maintained Reading Room in June 1912 in Room 908 of the Gas and Electric Building at 15th and Champa streets, has made several moves around downtown. It has been in its current location, the corner of the 16th Street Mall and Larimer Street, since 1990.

Christian Science reading rooms are spiritual bookstores that include a sales room and a study where people of all faiths and beliefs are welcome.

The Metropolitan Reading Room became jointly maintained in June 1912 when Second Church of Christ, Scientist, Denver, joined First Church of Christ, Scientist, Denver, and Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, Denver, in supporting it. Now, 11 Christian Science churches from throughout the Denver area are supporting members of the Metropolitan Reading Room.

“This is a very special occasion for the Metropolitan Reading Room, for Christian Scientists throughout Colorado and for Denver,” said Calaine Ohmert, the Metropolitan Reading Room’s board chairman.
